Laiza Moyo, a domestic worker has added content creator to her resume after going viral on Facebook and TikTok back in 2024. Moyo shares videos of herself doing her daily work, sharing cleaning tips and now commands over 600 thousand followers on both platforms and millions of views.
We recently had a chat with Laiza to learn more about her story, going viral and how she is changing perceptions around domestic work, one reel at a time.
“I realised that domestic work is one profession that is looked down upon, I started sharing videos of me and Blake (Laiza’s employer’s son) just as a way of showing the fun side of domestic work,” Laiza said on why she decided to make videos and share them on social media.
It was when people would recognize her on the streets or greet her in supermarkets that she realized her content was resonating with people beyond her close circles. “Some would even come and give me hugs and compliments on how they love my videos, the love I get from everyone who enjoys my videos is amazing, I thank God everyday,” she said.
While she never anticipated how viral her content would get, Laiza says she believes sharing the positive side of domestic work that is not often shown made her go viral. “I think people resonate with my content because it showcases the fun side of the day to day life of a domestic worker. From cleaning, taking care of kids and pets and cooking…”
One video in particular changed everything for Laiza. A video of herself teaching Blake how to eat pap. The video has been reshared across social media countless times and has garnered millions of views and likes, with people admiring the relationship Laiza shares with the family she works for.
Even more impressive is how most of Laiza’s content is not curated or planned but created in the moment.
Laiza has experienced all this success as a creator whilst working a full time job. On how she chooses what content to share, Laiza says, “since most of my content is at my place of work, I do put into consideration that I have to respect my employer’s privacy. So there’s certain areas that I don’t shoot content at and I also respect my employer’s time. I make sure that all the work is done at the end of the day.”
Content creation has brought more than views, likes and followers for Laiza. It’s opened many opportunities for her. “I’ve seen my self sitting at tables that I never dreamed I would sit at,” she reveals.
“My life really changed because I feel like now domestic work is recognised as a profession, we can go out in public wearing our uniforms without shame like police officers. Being proud of the work that I do has boosted my confidence a lot.”
On the misconceptions that come with the social media fame, Laiza puts the biggest one about herself to rest saying, “people always think I don’t do a lot of work and I’m always on my phone, truth is I get very busy behind the scenes.”
“My advise to someone who wants to start is consistency is key… Post Post Post, don’t let zero likes discourage you. Trust me, someone is watching and one day you will break through,” Laiza shared on how to start as a content creator.
We asked Laiza for what’s next and she said, ” we plan but God decides that’s all I can say for now.”
