In the latest on legacy brands and stars hopping on YouTube as the leading content platform, ABSA Bank is bringing financial wellness and knowledge to its users in the form of a micro-drama series exclusive on YouTube’s Shorts.
For brands, YouTube went from being a secondary platform for advertising to now hosting original content in forms of visual podcasts, LIVE conferences and now micro-drama series.
The ABSA Group Executive for Digital Marketing and Media, Sadika Fakir revealed how the ABSA team along with their partners used the global insights on the rise of micro-dramas to bring relevant, heartwarming drama. These insights include the micro-drama industry seeing 44% rise in consumption and the vertical series industry being estimated to be worth over $14 billion.
“It’s a micro-drama and it bring quite a lot of excitement. We’ve understood our customers and how viewers consume media. We know digital media is going from horizontal into vertical. I think we all consuming quite more than we actually signed up for. And the vertical drama is deemed an innovation, so we’re coming to you with South Africa’s first bank led micro-drama series,” said Fakir.


ABSA’s Chief Operating & Security Officer, Ina Steyn said that the series explores the everyday financial challenges and decisions that ordinary people and families face. “The practical lessons viewers can take away will be centred around how to manage your money responsibly. Viewers will also be exposed to important financial security topics such as how do identify scams and safeguard your personal information. the content is brought to life through relatable characters and family dynamics and everyday life moments people can identify with,” Steyn said.
The brand is targeting the huge South African audience that are mobile first consumers.
The micro-drama is aimed to show how when it comes to financial decisions, it can only takes one wrong move, one missed sign or one mistake to change everything and make things become more complicated. “Between love, life, family opinions and a few surprises along the way, will Sizwe and Lindiwe ever get to see their happily ever after?,” ABSA teased the storyline on social media.
