‘O Jewa Ke Eng?’ X Creator, Akreana Loses Account

It was in January 2019 when a 19 year old South African nursing student took to X (then Twitter) tweeting, ‘O Jewa Ke Eng?’ a question in Sotho language which loosely translates to ‘what’s bothering you?’. It went viral and the rest was history…until now.

Over the years, Akreana, real name Keabetswe Jan has gone from just a social media user to one of the most popular creators on the X platform. The tweet broke records and was put in the hall of fame of some of the most retweeted tweets in the platforms’s history. She build a community with her followers, grew her personal brand, created content, collaborated with brands, helped young creators grow on X and drove initiatives that supported and benefited many people.

Fast forward to July 2026, her X account with over eight hundred thousand followers was permanently suspended for alleged platform manipulation. Akreana took to Instagram writing an open letter to X appealing for her account suspension to be lifted.

“To the team at X, I never imagined I would be writing a letter like this. My account, @akreana_, was permanently suspended for alleged violations relating to platform manipulation and spam. If any of my activity unintentionally violated the X Rules, I sincerely apologize. It was never my intention to manipulate the platform, deceive others, or undermine the integrity of X. Had I known that any of my actions were crossing a line, I would have stopped immediately,” reads part of the open letter.

For years, X has been far more than a social media platform to me. It became my community, my creative outlet, and a place where I invested countless hours building meaningful conversations.

Over time, that community grew to more than 885,000 followers— not just a number, but hundreds of thousands of people I laughed with, learned from, and connected with every day. Losing that community overnight has been heartbreaking.

She went on to share how heartbreaking it feels to have years of work disappear overnight.

Akreana has become one of many creators in recent months who have lost their social media accounts overnight due to vague ‘account integrity’ issues.

From Instagram to X, the rise of suspended accounts and permanent bans is growing at a concerning rate leaving many worried about the future of content creation. For many creators, it’s not only a creative outlet but source of income and livelihood.

There seems to be an urgent need for creators to grow and manage various platforms by diversifying ecosystems with platforms like long-form content on YouTube. Turning followers into owned audiences through platforms like Substack and newsletters and building businesses that can live outside of social media. Smart creators are the ones who understand that the days of being a single-platform creator are behind us.
