McDonald’s South Africa has gone star-studded for its latest campaign, enlisting two of the country’s most celebrated stars; media personality Bonang Matheba and actress Nomzamo Mbatha for a new TV commercial celebrating its famous Chicken Foldover.
Matheba and Mbatha each bring their own cultural influence and star power to the screen.
The campaign, which officially launched today, does more than highlight the menu item’s 20-plus-year legacy; it also forms part of McDonald’s 30th anniversary in South Africa. Positioned as both nostalgic and celebratory, the brand is leaning on cultural cachet to connect with consumers who have grown up with the Foldover as a staple offering.

Talent curation and management for the campaign was led by Duma Collective. Founder and CEO Sibu Mabena highlighted the weight of the moment, saying: “To be asked to be the bridge between this global brand and these two global talents was an honor and a responsibility our team took seriously.”
The move underscores a broader trend among brands tapping into local cultural icons to strengthen consumer connection. By spotlighting public figures like Matheba and Mbatha who embody influence, aspiration, and South African excellence, McDonald’s SA is aligning its legacy menu item with contemporary cultural power.
With a 30-year milestone to mark and a fan-favorite product to spotlight, McDonald’s is making sure its anniversary moment feels both celebratory and undeniably local.
